Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Public Services Director, This is semi-skilled work in the Public Services Department.  The position has responsibilities in the maintenance and construction of public facilities; maintenance and upkeep of department vehicles; election set up and closing; maintenance of machines; cemetery lot sales and interments; and preparation for recreation program activities or other activities of the township

Essential Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities

An employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential job functions, duties and responsibilities.  These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function, duty or responsibility satisfactorily.

  • Performs unskilled tasks in the building and mechanical trades.
  • May work with and/or assist a crew of unskilled workers.
  • Operates hand and power tools that require mechanical aptitude.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of motor equipment used in general vehicle, grounds, construction, and/or maintenance activities.
  • Completes all necessary reports as required by immediate supervisor.
  • Operates and maintains motor vehicles needed to perform job functions.
  • Performs other work duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the position.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the job.

  • Valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License Group A with all applicable endorsements and all necessary operator permits that are required by law.
  • No major traffic convictions.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency diploma. (G.E.D.).
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in mechanical maintenance, vehicle maintenance, grounds maintenance, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and/or other building trades, election set up, maintenance of machines and election closing, cemetery lot sales, burial of vaults and remains.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of equipment. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, including proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. The ability to perform job functions with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to climb ladders and perform work at high elevations.
  • Ability to read maps, blueprints, drawings, instruction manuals and operating manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics and algebra computations.
  • Ability to read and write in order to perform job functions at a level normally acquired through the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Ability to successfully use deductive reasoning and logic in job related problem solving.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed for department functions, operations and activities.

 Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites; when visiting parks or construction sites the incumbent may be required to walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, be exposed to all weather conditions, dust and pollen, and mechanical hazards such as construction equipment; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside Township boundaries to attend meetings.

 Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
