Boater Safety Reminders & Information

The Township has received many complaints about boats and jet skis not following the safety rules of Belleville Lake. In response, Van Buren Public Safety Marine Division in coordination with Wayne County will be increasing patrols to crack down on hazardous behavior and issuing tickets for those that are violating safety rules. Please remember, all vessels must maintain a 100-foot distance from other crafts travel in a counter-clockwise direction around the lake. The max speed for all watercrafts on Belleville Lake is 40 mph. Reckless behavior will not be tolerated and is subject to penalties and fines. View the Handbook of Mi Boat Laws by clicking here.  Reckless behavior includes, but is not limited to:
  (1) If a person carelessly operates a vessel disregarding the rights or safety of others at a rate of speed or in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger a person or property,
  (2) If a person, while being towed on water skis or something similar carelessly navigates, steers, or controls himself or herself by disregarding the rights or safety of others and endangers or is likely to endanger a person or property,

If convicted, the court may issue an order prohibiting said persons from operating a vessel on the waters of this state for a period of not more than 2 years. Upon a person’s subsequent conviction under this section, the court shall order that person to participate in and complete a marine safety educational program approved by the department. An order issued pursuant to this subsection is in addition to any other penalty authorized under this part.
