Governor Whitmer Announces Grant To Rebuild Haggerty Road

We are starting 2023 with exciting news. Late last December, Gov. Whitmer awarded a grant to rebuild Haggerty Rd. As a result, Van Buren Township and Wayne County received a $3.5 million grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation to reconstruct and widen Haggerty Rd between Ecorse Rd and Van Born Rd. This grant results from the combined efforts of government and private companies.

The reconstruction and widening of Haggerty Rd are necessary to enable the increased traffic created by Our Next Energy's (ONE) new battery manufacturing plant for Electric Vehicles. Van Buren Township is the home of the $1.6 billion investment and " a perfect landing spot for this kind of innovative economic development given our talented workforce and strategic location," said Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara.

This improvement will ensure that Wayne County remains at the core of the country's automotive industry and the development of electric vehicles.

The project will create 2,112 high-paying skilled engineering, manufacturing, and operational jobs by 2025.
